Alderney Gate Public Library

March 24, 2026

Alderney Gate Public Library is another library shaped by the water, with the harbour just outside and light moving beautifully through the space. I had passed by it many times before while working at events in Alderney Landing, but I had never really gone in and taken the time to feel what the library was like. This time felt different. On a bright winter day, I brought my camera and finally stepped inside with more attention.

What stayed with me was not only the view, but the atmosphere created by the people in it. There was a warmth to the space that felt immediate and genuine. A staff member, who had also graduated from the LIT program, welcomed me with a kind of familiarity that made the library feel even closer. Upstairs, sunlight filled the children’s area where kids were playing, while in the teen space students were hanging out and spending time together. Around them were all kinds of people, each using the library in their own way, yet somehow sharing the same calm and open environment.

That was the feeling I carried away from Alderney Gate Public Library. More than anything, it felt like a place where different lives could exist side by side, each person finding their own rhythm in the same welcoming space. I was drawn to the warmth of it, and to the quiet sense of energy it gave back. It was the kind of atmosphere that leaves you feeling restored, and reminded me again that a library can offer much more than resources alone.
